Document & Image Restoration Over-view:

In house facilities have been established to carry out digital image restoration, repair and manipulation. Your original picture, negative or document is first scanned into a computer using a very high resolution A4 scanner. From then on the source image is safely stored and all the work is carried out on the computer copy before it is printed onto photographic quality paper (up to A3 in size) using a very high quality inkjet printer. Examples of the possible procedures are shown below:

Document Repair
Old documents such as Deeds and certificates can be very processed in the same way as photographs. Documents can be attractive and interesting to display however they are easily damaged and many will fade quickly if exposed to sunlight for long periods. Small documents (up to A4) can be directly scanned and larger documents can be photographed. The working image can be be repaired as described in Image Repair and then printed out up to A3 in size.

Producing Pictures From Negatives and Slides
It is getting more and more difficult to get prints from 'non-standard' negatives. We can produce prints from any slide or negatives, colour or black & white, up to 10cm x 10cm on film or glass. We have acheived good results from Victorian glass plates and old 110 negatives. Clearly negatives are delicate and as easily scratched or damaged as photographs, if this is the case then the output image can be repaired using our Image Repair service.

Montages
Images can be grouped togethered and a new 'montage' picture is created. The source images can be from different sources, slides, photographs, negatives or pictures and sizes can be adapted to give a balanced picture. Montages can then be printed up to A3 in size.

Image Repair
Photographs often become damaged over the passage of time. Pictures are easily scratched, creased and torn or faded. Often such photographs can be digitally restored to their former appearance. The service offered is to scan the original picture on a very high resolution digital scanner and transfer the image to a computer where it can be altered. The only time the original picture is handled is to scan it. Scanning is a very safe process and only requires the picture being laid flat on a plate of glass. Once scanned the original is safely stored and all the work is carried out on the computer copy.

The copy of the image can be altered in many ways:

- At a very basic level the image may just require adjustment of the brightness and contrast to correct fading.

- The emphasis and size of the original picture may not be appropriate for future use so the image can be selectively enlarged or reduced.

- Often old pictures will be spoilt by water marks and stains from glue used to mount it, these can be removed.

- The picture may have surface damage, creases, scratches, speckling or even pieces of the surface missing these can be removed or repaired.

Usually it is possible to greatly improve the quality of the computer image of even and seemly hopeless picture but if significant damage has occurred in critical parts of the picture then satisfactory results may be difficult to achieve. It is normally clear before the commission is undertaken whether or not problems are going to arise and a realistic expectation of probable the outcome can be set.

A full photographic service is provided by Concorde for the developing, printing and enlarging of photographs. There is a daily collection service, and films for developing and printing usually are returned at the next delivery.
