Pharmaceutical services

Dispensing and advice
Dispensing of NHS and private prescriptions is the main work of the pharmacist, assisted by a qualified technician. Part of the dispensing process involves checking the suitability of the prescribed medicine for each individual, and making sure that there are no adverse drug reactions with other medicines being taken. The pharmacist can also offer advice on the use of prescribed medicines, or medicines brought over the counter, and a range of related healthcare topics. Because the pharmacist has to supervise the sale and supply of medicines he is always readily available to answer any queries. We aim to provide a friendly and efficient dispensing service, and accessible advice on the safe use of medicines.

Sale of medicines
Trained counter staff are able to give advice on the treatment of minor ailments, and a wide range of products are now available for sale through pharmacies. The pharmacist is always available to give additional help and advice if needed. Our medicine prices are fairly competitive, but we feel it is more important to ensure that the correct medicines are recommended and used safely by the provision of good advice.

Emergency Supply
Urgent prescriptions may be dispensed outside normal hours if the Pharmacist is available. To check availability please ring 01749 812342. On arrival please ring the doorbell on the front door of the house ( No. 3 ). A list of alternative Pharmacies and their opening hours is displayed on the Pharmacy door.

Out of Hours
Prescriptions may be posted through the letterbox and will dealt with when the Pharmacy next opens. Again, a list of alternative Pharmacies and opening hours is displayed on the Pharmacy door for reference.

Repeat Prescriptions
If at the time of requesting your repeat prescription you ask for it to be sent to Bruton Pharmacy, we will collect it on our next visit (after it has been signed by a doctor) and dispense it ready for collection at your convenience. We receive prescriptions from Bruton Surgery at 11 o'clock, 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock each weekday and at 10 o'clock on Saturdays.

Compliance Aids
We stock a variety of equipment and systems to help improve the regularity and process of taking medicines. We can, with the agreement of the Doctor, provide either daily Dosette wheels, weekly Dosette boxes or monthly Nomad sets. These systems allow us to divide a patient's medicines into days of the week and times of the day, this makes it much easier for them to remember which medicines to take when. We have a range of compliance tools for sale such as tablet cutters and tablet crushers.

Aids to daily living
We stock a limited range of items that can make life easier for the less able, and staff are happy to advise on the suitability of various aids. Larger or more expensive items can be ordered from a catalogue on an individual basis.

Smoking cessation advice

Andy Norman is a trained smoking cessation adviser within the Somerset Smoking Cessation advice service. After discussion with people who want to give up smoking, he can refer them to a doctor for a prescription for appropriate treatment, and nicotine replacement therapy is now available on NHS prescription. Advice to travellers The pharmacist can advise on the up to date malaria prevention treatment for various foreign destinations. Some treatments can be purchased over the counter, whereas others will need a prescription, but the pharmacist will be happly to advise in either case.

Emergency contraception
The pharmacist is trained and able to sell the "Morning after Pill" if it is appropriate. Some questions will need to be asked to make sure it the correct treatment, and confidentiality will be maintained.

Disposal of Medicines
Unwanted and out of date medicines can be brought into the pharmacy for safe disposal as we are part of the Somerset DOOP collection system.
